Summer Spectacular: Week Five

Summer Spectacular Week Five

To help keep your holidays super fun, creative and budget friendly, there will be 63 unique activity ideas to unlock. Each week, another seven ideas, plus a puzzle, will be released. This is Week Five. Check out the full schedule here. We hope you find some great ideas to keep you entertained!

This week, we're saying goodbye to July, spending time with our friends for the International Day of Friendship, and exploring quirky ways to explore new places and see them from a different angle.

Plus, in case of rainy weather, there's another puzzle for you to crack. Teresa Trayals thought she'd test her spycraft skills by giving all her phone contacts codenames. But now she doesn't know who is who! Can you help her crack the codes so she can call her buddy Artie Fact? Check the answers here when you've solved it.

Here are the seven activities for this week...

Saturday 29th July

When you visit a city in the UK, there's a very good chance you'll see a cathedral. But, despite usually being linked to cities, there are cathedrals in some towns (and one village) too. Some are Anglican, some are Catholic, but all of them are well worth a visit!

Instead of enjoying the usual view outside a cathedral, abbey or minster, head inside and go on a tour of the building. You're bound to unlock a few historical facts and treasures while you're there. Join a formal or audio tour if they have one. If you're lucky (and not afraid of heights), you might even be able to join a tower tour to get a view from above the city or town!

Sunday 30th July

It's International Day of Friendship - the best day of the year to spend with your bestie! But, try mixing things up when you hang out this time...

Ask a friend to take you to their favourite places in their hometown or another location they love. Ask them to take you to their favourite attraction, café, viewpoint, landmark, etc. and listen to the stories they have to tell. You could then swap and take them to some places you love.

Teresa Trayals also wants to hang out with her buddy Artie Fact. Can you help her decipher his codename in this puzzle so she can call him?

We love hunting for treasure here at Treasure Trails - no surprise there! But sometimes you can't beat finding real-life treasure at the end of your search.

Today, sign up for a geocaching app or community and head out in search of some hidden treasures! You could try looking for all the caches in your local area, or combine geocaching with a Treasure Trail for the ultimate treasure-hunting day out!

Remember to take a pen with you in case you find a log book and something small you're happy to part with if you find a swappables cache.

Speaking of hidden treasure, why not make some of your own?! Create a time capsule that you can tuck away somewhere in your house - like in the attic or under the bed - to open at a later date.

You could include photos, keepsakes and a letter to your future self, and maybe even a brief summary about what's happening in your world right now - what songs you're listening to, what hobbies you're pursuing, what's happening in your local area, what your family members are up to, etc.

Lock and hide the capsule, then set a date to open it. The longer you wait, the more fun it'll be to see what's inside!

How often do you visit an art gallery when you visit a new place? You might visit the big ones - like the National Portrait Gallery or the Tate - but what about the independent galleries scattered around towns and cities?

Pick a new town or city to visit, but instead of heading to the usual sites, go for a walk and take a peek inside every independent art gallery and open studio you come across. If they have a large art gallery or a museum with an art exhibit, visit there too after you've checked out all the independent ones. Maybe you'll be inspired to create your own masterpiece when you get home.

Thursday 3rd August

It's time for a summer holiday! Where do you fancy? Maybe a beach trip to Hawaii? Island hopping in the Caribbean? A foodie feast in Thailand? Or maybe some historical sightseeing in Italy? The choice is yours when you armchair travel!

Dress up in your holiday gear, grab a selection of international snacks, and then pop on a film or TV show set in the country of your choice. You could even go the extra mile and try recreating a meal or drink from that place, or see if you can find public webcams and virtual tours to really immerse yourself.

Friday 4th August

How are your hill walking skills? It's time to put them to the test! Don't worry, we're not telling you to do the Three Peaks challenge...

Locate the highest peak in your area, then climb it. Make sure you take a picture at the top! How high have you climbed?

If hill walking isn't your thing, try finding a peak where you can drive close to the top, or that has other vehicular access - like the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which takes you right up to the top of Yr Wyddfa. Or, see if there's a visitor centre nearby where you can learn more about the area.
